After checking in at our hotel, we bundled up in the freezing cold and went on a canal ride. (See the bike parking garage behind the boat? Do you think that is the same one from the Amazing Race where they had to search through a bunch on bikes looking for something? Aunt Jeanne and I could not remember. Either way, they sure ride a lot of bikes in Amsterdam.)
We got to see the beautiful building and houseboats on the canals.
We took the boat to the Van Gogh museum. We were not able to take any pictures inside the museum of his gorgeous artwork but it was neat to learn about Van Gogh and see his original artwork.
Then we took the canal boat back to the train station. We rode the tram to the Anne Frank house. It was very neat and eye-opening to see where the Frank family spent 2 years of their life in hiding from the Germans. We got to see all of the rooms where they spent their days. The rooms we saw are the original rooms but the house was added to in order to make the museum flow. So the outside is not exactly what it looked like when the Franks hid there.
Then we walked back to our hotel. (We were too cold and tired to go to the Red Light Districk.. sorry Kate!) On the way back to our hotel, we saw a coffee shop (in Amsterdam, plain old coffee is not sold there. Other items that are illegal in USA but are legal in Amsterdam are sold there). Paul, sorry I am a wuss for not going in or even crossing the street but this picture is for you!
After warming up and checking our flight status (snow was all over Europe and flights were being cancelled left and right), we headed to dinner at a Dutch restaurant.
We then went to bed early to wake up at 4:30am to catch our 8am flight. As we arrived at the airport, it started snowing. It was a great way to end our fabulous time in Europe!
